THE HISTORY OF COFFEE

Once upon a time in a land far away (now known as Ethiopia), in around about the sixth century, a goat herder by the name of Kaldi, obsevered his goats eating a bitter type of cherry (coffee cherries) from the neighbouring trees. Once they had eaten the cherries they would appear skittish in their behavour.

Kaldi picked some of these cherries and ate them, himself however they were hard and bitter, so he made a pulp, using a pestle and mortar. A gruel type substance was made. He too felt bright, thoughtfull and awake once he had eaten the coffee cherries!

A Gift From God!

The monks used this coffee cherry gruel to heighten their awareness and to stay awake through hours of meditation. They felt it was their secret and had been given to them and them alone as a gift God.

The roasted bean, like many great things came about through a mistake, a bit like, over roasting the barley to make Irish Stout. It is thought that one the coffee bushes caught fire and the most wonderful aroma filled the air. This was the point when Rosie & Java became excited!

Seeds of the newly recognised Kaffe, the original name for what we now know as coffee were stolen, from the monks.

It is only now known that coffee grows between the two tropics, wars ensued between the Viennese, Turks, and possibly a few others.

This invigorating drink gave them a renewed sense of energy and vitality. It was also considered to be a natural digestive.
